The annual conference of the Australasian Section of the International Wine Law Association (AIDV) was held in the picturesque Adelaide Hills over 1, 2 and 3 November 2024. Our Managing Director, Mathew Brittingham teamed up with Kate Hardy from Proof Legal, to provide a 101 overview of the tax treatment of wine in Australia, explain the nuances of product classification and the application of Wine Equalisation Tax, and provide insights into the Australian Government’s current policy position on alcohol tax and how it might shape producer rebates and tax treatment in the future.

Our team visited Government House on North Terrace on Wednesday 7th August 2024. It was a special reception hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC Governor of South Australia, to express gratitude and recognition for those people and organisations that continually contribute to the United Nations Association of Australia, South Australian Division (UNAASA). It was such a privilege to be acknowledged for such community work in such a magnificent setting.

SESSION 5: ARE TRUSTS STILL AN EFFECTIVE TAX & ASSET PROTECTION DEVICE
Mathew spoke at the Tax Institute - SA Tax Forum on 8th March 2023 at Adelaide Oval. This session looked at whether trusts are still an effective tax and asset protection tool following the recent limitations imposed on the use of trusts to minimise tax through s100A and what constitutes financial accommodation for Div 7A purposes. It also considered issues with Australian trusts that have overseas beneficiaries. Finally, the session considered the utility of trusts for asset protection purposes.
